The Gwinnett Senior Softball League
remembers the players and the spouses
who have passed away by hosting a Memorial Tournament each year
in honor of these individuals. Only 12 teams are invited to play
in the Tournament, and all profits go back to GSS or to GSS sponsored
charities.
The 2012
Memorial Tournament was held on Saturday, April
7, at Bethesda Park. The
ceremony honoring players/spouses started at 8:45 a.m. with the
games starting at 9:30 a.m. - last games were scheduled to start
at 4:00 p.m. - all games were finished by 5:45 p.m.
For information on the 2013 tournament,
contact Howard Wilcox (678.469.1083) - 50 Teams, Bill Grimes (678.577.2811)
- 60 Teams, Ed Davis (1.706.540.7495) - 70 Teams, or Doris Warpole,
League Secretary (770.447.8592).
Life's journey is not to arrive safely
at the grave in a well preserved body,
but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "Holy
Cow...What a ride!"

Boswell's Prayer
Dear God:
Help me
be a good sport in this game of Life. I don't ask for an easy place
in the line up. Put me anywhere you need me. I only ask that I can
give you 100% of everything I have. If all the hard drives seem
to come my way, I thank you for the compliment.
Help me
remember that you never send a player more trouble than he can handle.
And help me, Lord to accept the bad breaks as part of the game.
May I always play on the square, no matter what the others do. Help
me to study the book so I'll know the rules.
Finally,
God, if the natural turn of events goes against me and I am benched
for sickness or old age, help me to accept that is part of the game
too. Keep me from whimpering that I was framed or that I got a raw
deal.
And when
I finish the final inning, I ask for no laurels. All I want is to
believe in my heart that I played as well as I could and that I
didn't let you down. Amen

Around The Corner
Poem by Charles Hanson Towne
Around the corner I have a friend,
In this great city that has no end,
Yet the days go by and weeks rush on,
And before I know it, a year is gone.
And I never see my old friends face,
For life is a swift and terrible race,
He knows I like him just as well,
As in the days when I rang his bell.
And he rang mine but we were younger then,
And now we are busy, tired men.
Tired of playing a foolish game,
Tired of trying to make a name.
"Tomorrow" I say! "I will call on
Jim
Just to show that I'm thinking of him",
But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes,
And distance between us grows and grows.
Around the corner, yet miles away,
"Here's a telegram sir," "Jim died today."
And that's what we get and deserve in the end.
Around the corner, a vanished friend.
